Reflections on Roger McNamee’s visit

It is so satisfying to introduce your friends to someone you know they will love.  That is how I felt last week hosting Roger McNamee as part of Tuck’s Media Symposium.  Roger and his band, Moonalice, spent the day at Tuck both educating and entertaining the community. Of course the concert was a blast, but the highlight of the visit was Roger’s rapid-fire analysis of tech investing. Refined over the past year, Roger’s 10 Hypotheses for Technology Investing provides a compellingly different view of the rapidly changing landscape and opportunities ahead.

With Windows devices now representing less the 50% of internet-connected devices (from 95% four short years ago), Roger argues that everything has changed. Winners are those building the hyperweb to exploit the rapidly expanding hypernet (internet + carriers). Losers are those who can’t make the jump to the mobile world. With the first wave of the “social web” over, Roger advised the students to focus on companies that power or benefit from hyperweb+hypernet – think HTML5.

This video is a must see for anyone thinking about a career or investing in tech and is just plain fun for anyone who likes to think about the changes happening all around us. Of course, when you finish the talk, enjoy the concert – brought to you via Moonalice’s own HTML5 experiment.

Roger visits the CDS office and shows his Moonalice HTML5 site on our iPad. (l to r) Hans Brechbühl, Kelli Pippin, Roger McNamee, Eric Johnson, Juhee Kwon and Tim Paradis.

I also dont agree with all his ideas. However, it requires courage to offer a thought provoking vision such as the one that he presented.

Meeting our Co-founder will remain one of those crazy cool life-events I never forget.

Roger’s passion for technology is intoxicating and his view of the possibilities with HTML5 has ignited my own interest. It’s not just another program – and I do believe, like Roger, that today is one of the most important moments in the tech industry.

This is the most thought-provoking presentation I’ve seen at Tuck. It’s rare to have someone shift your perspective so dramatically as Roger does, especially about an industry where we all think we know what’s going on.

Not sure I agree with all his points about the inevitable decline of pc-based and fixed location computing, which I think are biased by his experience as a cutting edge user based in Silicon Valley (for instance not everyone carries around three ipads!!)
