{"id":7136,"date":"2014-06-16T10:09:39","date_gmt":"2014-06-16T10:09:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/magazines\/vanderbilt-business\/?p=7136"},"modified":"2017-08-08T15:19:08","modified_gmt":"2017-08-08T15:19:08","slug":"lead-and-succeed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.owen.vanderbilt.edu\/vanderbiltbusiness\/lead-and-succeed\/","title":{"rendered":"Lead and Succeed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.owen.vanderbilt.edu\/programs\/young-professional-portfolio\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7155\" title=\"oneyear639x348\" src=\"https:\/\/magazine.owen.vanderbilt.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/legacy\/i\/oneyear639x348.jpg\" alt=\"One year program event\" width=\"639\" height=\"348\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When students in Vanderbilt\u2019s one-year programs\u2014the master of accountancy, master of finance, and master of accountancy valuation\u2014graduate, they don\u2019t just enter the workforce with business skills and expertise in accounting, accounting valuation or finance\u2014they also leave with powerful leadership skills.<\/p>\n<p>To prepare for what awaits in a rapidly changing workforce, students participate in Owen\u2019s Leadership Development Program, which provides robust assessments of their strengths and weaknesses plus sessions with an independent, certified executive coach.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6574\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6574\" style=\"width: 252px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.owen.vanderbilt.edu\/admissions\/ms-finance-admissions\/meet-the-team.cfm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6574 \" title=\"kateB_450x613\" src=\"https:\/\/magazine.owen.vanderbilt.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/legacy\/i\/kateB_450x613.jpg\" alt=\"Kate Barraclough\" width=\"252\" height=\"343\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6574\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kate Barraclough oversees the master of finance program<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe would like to differentiate our program by seeing it not just providing skills for your first job, but providing you with skills that will last over the course of your career,\u201d says Kate Barraclough, the MS Finance program director.<\/p>\n<h2>Proven<\/h2>\n<p>Part of that success requires being able to lead projects, people or both, regardless of job title. Already, master\u2019s program graduates are demonstrating that they have the skills needed to make a difference in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>Karl Hackenbrack, associate dean and director of accountancy, points to Amelia Emmert, MAcc\u201908, who was just promoted to manager at EY\u2014the first MAcc graduate to do so. He believes she will quickly be joined by others. \u201cHer class is the first one to have the tenure to earn the rank of manager,\u201d Hackenbrack says. \u201cNo one will ever question her technical, teaming or managerial skills. She\u2019s proven them to earn the position of manager. I see leadership potential in all students or they wouldn\u2019t be in the program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the international public accounting firms, recent hires have an opportunity to showcase skills at the earliest stages of\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 13px\">their career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone has to do the blocking and tackling,\u201d Hackenbrack says of new public accounting hires. \u201cThe willingness to be a contributing member of a larger team and knowing your place within that larger team\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 13px\">is extremely important.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is going to do that the next year? That year\u2019s new hire. That\u2019s where the traditional definition of leadership kicks in with public accounting: You\u2019ll never do this task again. You\u2019ll train someone to do the task that you did last go-round. These teams are structured so that an important part of your job is training the person coming in behind you.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6577\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6577\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6577\" title=\"LeadSucceed1_400x297\" src=\"https:\/\/magazine.owen.vanderbilt.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/legacy\/i\/LeadSucceed1_400x297.jpg\" alt=\"One year program event\" width=\"400\" height=\"297\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6577\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Owen students receive an individualized approach to leadership development.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s apparent in the workplace that Vanderbilt MAcc graduates possess those abilities. Hackenbrack recounts a story told to him by a student whose father is a partner at a Big Four firm. She said that during her internship, she could recognize other Vanderbilt MAcc alums by the way they acted on the job.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px\">Vanderbilt MAcc alumni, Hackenbrack notes, are characterized by their professionalism, strong client and team skills and maturity. \u201cThe career development program is recognizable in the workplace,\u201d Hackenbrack says. \u201cI\u2019m sure some of that is recruiting the right people in the first place, but a lot has to do with the professional development programming that occurs on campus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A world of possibilities<\/h2>\n<p>Barraclough says that the leadership and career development work for Vanderbilt MS Finance students includes building skills that can be applied to jobs in different facets in the industry. \u201cWith MS Finance, we\u2019re helping them identify what they want to do and what makes it a good career choice,\u201d Barraclough says of the intensive nine-month program. \u201cWe help them understand who they are as professionals and how knowing their strengths helps them be more effective and successful as team members and as leaders in the workplace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An individualized approach runs throughout Owen\u2019s Leadership Development Program, no matter the degree, says Amy Lambert, MBA\u201904, senior manager of the program.
