Engaged Leadership
As with most industries, technology has dramatically changed the way the military operates. From transportation to communication, the Armed Services have adopted new technologies and adapted to new threats. The rapidly evolving landscape of terrorism and cyber-attacks are bringing even more challenges. To rise to those challenges, the military is looking outside of itself, to see the future and learn from disruptive firms like Amazon.
With all this change, there is one thing that remains constant—a focus on people and the concept of “engaged leadership”. Over his nearly 40-year career in the U.S. Marine Corps, General Ronald Bailey notes that his leadership style remains anchored in these four principles:
1. Get to know your people.
2. Understand your people.
3. Take care of your people.
4. Create opportunities for your people.
Ask any veteran and you will hear stories of caring leaders, camaraderie, and the importance of inspired and engaged leadership. Watch my interview with General Bailey and hear his take on how organizations move forward and adapt to change.
